World’s Best Origami

world's best origami bookMy son recently had a big ‘Market Day’ for his last project in 3rd grade.  This one project would make up a huge percentage of the grade.  It consisted of each child starting their own business (or they could partner with someone) and selling the goods they made to the rest of the school who were given play money.  It could be anything from baked goods to a service of some sort.  My son chose to make origami treasures and take them in to sell.

For a while he had been using YouTube videos to work along with.  These were a little hard for him.  He seemed to pick the grander designs (obviously because they were ‘cooler’) and would have to pause the video several times.  In the end he would get frustrated and give up doing any at all.

World’s Best Origami to the rescue!

I found the book ‘World’s Best Origami’.  In the first chapter of the book you will learn the basics of Origami.  From different basic folds, to the symbols you may come across, to choosing your paper.  After the initial chapter there are chapters on birds, animals, flowers, people, containers, geometric, modular, practical and fun.  Inside each of those chapters is what I love the best.

Let’s take the Animals chapter, for instance.  The first design is a cricket.  Right by the chapter heading it lets you know the difficulty level is 1.  When you finish the cricket you will move onto the pig, which is also level 1.  Next is a cat’s head with a difficulty level of 2.  The animals get harder as you complete each one and this is how each chapter is designed.  This is great for someone like my son who is just starting out and needs to know that the dragon he is trying to fold is a level 200.

For each step of a design there is a drawing and an explanation in words of the way to make that fold.  Some of the easier designs have only a few steps, but the harder ones are a lot more involved.  Great for those who have already mastered the basics and are looking for a challenge.

I really enjoyed using this book to help my son with his school project.  And I felt good knowing that he could use it on his own without getting frustrated.  I believe he had over 70 origami creations for his market at school.

  1. How awesome that your son came up with 70 different projects for school! I have always wanted to learn (and teach the kids) oragami, and I love that the book breaks the different projects down by difficulty level. Sounds like a great primer on the art of paper folding!
