I never know what to do with my old cell phones when I upgrade.  I usually just let my kids play with the used ones.  Here are some other ideas I found around the web.

Donate Old Cell Phones

A couple of places that would love to have your old cell phone donations are:

HopeLine – HopeLine® from Verizon puts the nation’s most reliable network to work in the community by turning no-longer used cell phones into support for domestic violence victims and survivors.  Visit the website for information on how you can help out.

Cell Phones for Soldiers – Cell Phones for Soldiers is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing cost-free communication services to active duty military members and veterans.  Visit the website for more information.

Sell Old Cell Phones

If you’d rather make a couple of bucks (or more depending on the type of phone) off of your old cell phone, check into a service like SellCell.com who compare the prices from all the top phone buyers in the US to ensure you get the most money when selling your cell phone.  The service at SellCell.com is a great way of earning extra cash, recycling your old cell phones, and is also great for the environment!

Use Old Cell Phones as an Emergency Phone

A great use for old cell phones is to charge it up and stick it somewhere safe, as a 911 emergency phone.  All cell phones are required to allow a user to dial 911 regardless of service or not.  A great place to store an emergency phone is in the glove compartment of a car or anywhere you may not have your cell phone.

Other Uses for Old Cell Phones

A few final uses for old cell phones would be to:

  • give it to a child to play pretend with
  • give it to a child (or for yourself) to take apart and learn about electronics
  • recycle it
What do you usually do with your old cell phones?

I had no idea they were required to be 911 accessible whether or not the phone was active. Going to stick one in our glove box for sure. Thanks!
