It all started with a monarch caterpillar I found in my yard.
I was out weeding my row of flowers and plants and spotted him on one of the weeds. He was beautiful and I was excited to watch him change with my children.
Coincidentally, I received some Indiana Pocket Naturalist guides from Waterford Press the exact same day.

I used the Butterflies and Moths guide to confirm it was, indeed, a monarch caterpillar. Then I was able to search online for how to care for and feed him. When searching for milkweed to feed him, I pulled out the Indiana Trees and Wildflowers guide to make sure I found the correct weed. It was very handy having the guide to help me out.
After watching our caterpillar emerge from his chrysalis, we grew to love butterfly watching. My daughter and I love to take walks to try and find all of the many different butterflies pictured in the guide. She loves to carry the guide and find the matching pictures of the ones we find.

I also have the Indiana Birds guide, but haven’t been able to use it yet. I am planning to take it with me to a local wildlife reserve. I enjoy taking pictures of the birds and butterflies and having the Birds guide with me I will know what birds I am taking pictures of.

I love how simple, yet useful these guides are. They are small, sturdy and packed with beautiful and descriptive pictures.
Waterford Press has guides and more for your state, region, parks and sanctuaries and many other areas. The guides range from seashore life to birds, butterflies and so much more! They are perfect for children or adults who love wildlife gazing and would make wonderful stocking stuffers!
