“All’s well… as long as you’re wild!”
‘Diego the Tornado’ is the second book of ‘The Wild Soccer Bunch’ series by Joachim Masannek. In this book we follow along as Diego and the other member’s of the Wild Soccer Bunch struggle to come together and overcome their fear. Fabio is the new kid in town and an excellent soccer player himself. The ‘gentlemen’ of the Wild Soccer Bunch lose hope when they find out Fabio is not allowed to be on their team. Fabio’s father is a legendary soccer player himself and tells the boys that none of them will become soccer legends if they are playing for the Wild Soccer Bunch. His son, Fabio, will be playing for the Furies, a real team.
Diego’s mom is the gentle encouragement the boys need as she helps them devise a plan that will make their team a real team. Each of the boys works hard and comes together to find all of the elements they need to show the Furies they are a real team and to challenge them in a soccer match. All of the boys show so much dedication and determination from donating their allowance for jersey’s to practicing hard day and night.
If they win the game, they will show all of the sponsors who denied them, that they made a mistake. They will show Fabio’s father that they are a real and capable team. If they lose, they will lose their jersey’s, they will lose the chance to show the Furies that they are good enough. Who will win the game? What lesson’s will be learned? You’ll have to read it to find out!
My son’s take on the story:
My eleven year old son read this book before I did and mentioned that his favorite character in the book was Diego’s mother. That she pushed the boys to not lie down and take what Fabio’s father said to heart. She told them to stand up and fight for what they beleive in and are good at. Later in the book she also helps the boys to overcome another fear before the big game.
He would like to recommend this book to kids his age, especially ones who like sports.
I would have to agree with him. I enjoyed the mother in this story and recommend it to kids around his age. There are many lessons to learn from this story and not all of them are being learned by the children.
