Rosie the Rainbow Mu – We’re All Beautiful

I love children’s books with a good story.  I can’t stand, and won’t read, books that have no meaning to them or don’t make sense.  Even if they have a lot of cutesy rhymes.  They may sound good, but deep down they really aren’t worth the paper they are printed on.

Rosie the Rainbow Mu

Rosie the Rainbow Mu, by Angela DeMuro, has a wonderful story.  It is one that I love reading to my child over and over again.

Rosie is a beautiful Mu with feathers of all different, vibrant colors.  But Rosie doesn’t know she is beautiful.  In fact, Rosie is sad.  None of the other Mu are colorful like she is.  Some of the meaner Mu even make fun of her because she doesn’t look like them.

In her desperate need to fit in and look like everyone else, Rosie attempts to hide her feathers in several ways.  In the end, a great friend helps Rosie to see that being different isn’t a bad thing.  And that Rosie is, in fact, beautiful, inside and out.

My Thoughts

My daughter has enjoyed reading this book every night before bed.  It’s one of the ones she always brings to me to read lately and I don’t mind reading it to her over and over.  I hope that in some way this book can teach her that she is beautiful even if her actions, choices, or looks are different than others.

I remember feeling self-conscious as a child about the dog-bite scars on my face.  They were different, but as I aged (and grew wiser) I realized that they were just a part of me.  A part of what makes me unique.  Having scars, or any other difference, didn’t mean I was any less beautiful on the inside or out.  And I hope that my daughters will feel the same about themselves.

Oh, and at the end of the book are coloring pages so your little one can color her own Mu:

I definitely recommend this book!
