Kidz Gear Wireless Car Headphones

kidzgear wireless headphonesWe are a very techie family.

On any given evening you will find all of us, off on our own, interacting with some electronic gadget of some sort.  My husband is on the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, or working on his laptop.  My two boys are in the playroom playing games on their Xbox 360.  I am on my laptop, usually working.  And my daughter is going back and forth between another laptop and an iPod.

The house is often filled with many different noises. (Including the children).  I’m a quiet person.  I like tranquility.  Or at least not hearing a dozen different games in the background all competing for the grand prize of being loudest.  I was happy to try the Kidz Gear Wireless Car Headphones for my daughter.  It was only one less noise happening at the same time, but one less noise can make a difference.

These IR Wireless headphones are actually made specifically to work in a vehicle with a DVD player installed.  I don’t have one of those.  Luckily, I was able to pick up the IR transmitter to be able to use the headphones in the house.  The transmitter did the trick.  I was able to plug it in, connect it to the laptop and her headphones (once turned on and in direct vision) automatically picked of the music she wanted to listen to.  They work pretty well for what I wanted in the house.  I would love to have been able to try them for their intended purpose in a vehicle.  I can see them being pretty useful on a long trip for a child.

What’s Good?

  • The headphones are kid sized.  They fit my toddler perfectly and can expand to fit an older child.
  • They are pretty hardy.  My 8 month old has played with them a few times and the headphones have stood up to her abuse.
  • No wires.  When my toddler has used wired headphones before, she has often forgotten she is connected to something and raced off.  Pulling down whatever she was connected to.

Possible Drawbacks?

  • With IR, you do have to be directly in front of the transmitter for it to work.  My daugther moved to the other side of the room and wondered why they didn’t work anymore.  Not really a big problem if you just turn the transmitter the other way.  Or use them in a vehicle where the child won’t be moving anyway.

Overall, I’m pretty pleased with them and my daughter is always asking to listen to her music on her headphones.
