Allergic Reaction Rash to Penicillin Antibiotic

allergic reaction to penicillin

I just wanted to quickly post and let you know that this is what an allergic reaction to penicillin looks like.

My son came home with this rash last weekend.  All over his body.  At first I was a little worried because it looked so similar to some of the measles rash images I found.

But the doctor said it was only a reaction to penicillin.

It took a few days to stop itching and and start going away.  He still has a little of it on his arms and feet, but it’s not as red and slowly going away.

There are so many different causes for rashes out there.  I know it was a little concerning for me to see him with a full body rash, but according to emedicinehealth.com there are only five life-threatening rashes that require immediate attention.  These rashes have one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Rashes that affect the entire body including mouth, nose, eyes, vagina, anus and urethra (on men and women).
  • Rashes that have blisters on top of them.

Serious rashes are rare and most of the time the rash is harmless and will heal in a few days.  Just keep calm and assess the rash yourself, looking for these ‘serious’ symptoms.  If none of these apply, you can probably wait until the doctor is open to get checked out.

But, if you’re like me and like to know quickly what is ailing your child, just give them a quick call (there is usually someone on call if it’s after hours) to ease your mind.

  1. Yikes! That must have completely freaked you out. Glad it wasn’t anything serious.

  2. How awful! Hope he feels better soon!

  3. Not one, but BOTH of my little guys are allergic to Penacillin, so I am very familiar with that terrible rash/reaction. My littlest man is ALSO allergic to Cipro, too, so he’s been through it twice. It’s so hard when it’s the little people in our lives..

    • I’m glad it was only a rash and not something more serious.

So far, I don’t think any of the others are allergic to it.

  4. Oh my gosh, I can’t believe your poor son had to deal with that horrible rash! I hope he is fully recovered now!

  5. Important to share, I’m glad you did!

  6. I wish I saw this yesterday. Landon broke out in a rash yesterday kinda like that! He’s allergic to Cefprozil which is an antibiotic. It’s scary with them all in spots!

    Hi.

Thank you for posting this. I was quite worried that this rash would take a long period of time to go away. I woke up one morning with swollen lips and this red rash ALL over my body. I was on two boxes of Antibiotics and i think after taking the second box my body decided that was enough.

Was quite a shock. Doctors gave me Zyrtec a antihistamine medicine. Ive taken it two days now, but i am still covered in these. How long does it take to go away and does drinking a lot of water help to wash the Antibiotics out of my bloodstream.

    Thank you for your answers
