This is what I did this past Friday the 13th…

No, I didn’t cause the hole in the road.
Well… I kind of did actually.
We had no heat. The heater was running, the pilot light was on, but the air coming from the vents was not hot like it should have been.
After having multiple people out to check the furnace and the meter, finally the gas company discovered it was something on their end. The meter was somehow broken so we weren’t getting the gas that we should for the furnace to burn hot. They ended up having to put in a new meter and new pipes. Pipes that, apparently, were right in the middle of the road.
I did learn a few things from that cold 50° day in my house:
- A good way to get all of the kids away from you is to turn the heat down to 50° and place a space heater in one of their bedrooms. They’ll stay in there all day.
- The above works for cats as well.
- Little toddler hands can be quite icy when the house is that cold. Take precaution when you lift your shirt up to breastfeed. Icy hands will cause a blood curdling scream to escape your lips. This will also make the kids (and some cats) from point one and two come out of their bedroom to check on you.
- If you’re going to have heating problems, it’s best if it’s the gas companies fault. Less to no money out of your pocket. When the gas company says, “it’ll be a couple of hours,” they really mean like five or six.
In all seriousness, it wasn’t the gas companies ’fault’ and I’m thankful that they fixed us up within the day. I’m also happy to have had so many friends and family offer heaters and a warm place to stay.

Ugh – we have oil heat at house & we ran out last February. The guage was broken, so I had no idea we were out (it’s fixed now thankfully), but I remember how brutal it was in the house until the oil company could get out and fix the guage and fill my tank. Brrrr.
